Relationships

Happy Earth Day!

My coaches are always harping on the fact that fitness business owners like me do a terrible job with relationships.

If that seems counterintuitive, it certainly is. Fitness is a people business. If you’re going to succeed at it, you better be good with people.

But from time to time, we all get sucked into the next sexy promotion or sales funnel, or the next fancy Facebook ad that’s working for one internet guru or another.

The simple truth is, if you’re a coach like me and you really want to help more people and build a business you can be proud of, the best place to start – the only place to start – is with the people you already know.

Duh.

The people I know also know people, and chances are some of them need my help.

And if I don’t ask, I’ll never get a chance to help them. And that’s not going to make life any better for them … or for me.

Why am I sharing this? It occurs to me that the same thing is probably happening to my clients (as well as former clients and future clients).

You see, when most people start a fitness program, they end up riding solo.

They either try to do it on their own without a coach, or even if they have a coach, they don’t share their journey or goals with the people in their lives who are closest to them.

There are two problems with this approach.

First, we all do better with a coach … even coaches 🙂

Second, if you’ve started taking steps to change your life for the better, become happier and healthier, and potentially live longer (and pain/disease-free), why would you keep that to yourself?

Now, I’m not suggesting you become a CrossFit groupie and start posting and talking about nothing but CrossFit.

But telling the people who are important to you that you’re exercising and eating better can only result in two outcomes … and both of them are exceedingly good.

One, it’ll keep you motivated and accountable to the people you’ve shared your journey with.

Two, it could inspire someone you care about to come along for the ride.

So let’s make a deal. In the coming week, I’m going to reach out to five people I know and see if they need my help … or know someone who needs my help. If those five conversations result in me getting an opportunity to help one person, that’s a win for both of us.

Would you do the same? Reach out to five people you know and either share your wins on your fitness journey so far … or … if you’re thinking about starting a fitness program, let them know what you’re going to do and why.

If one of those people decides to join you, then you will have done the single best thing you can do for another person … help them make a positive change that will improve their life.

And they will make you more motivated and accountable … and will make your journey even more rewarding and enjoyable.

Would you reply back and let me know when you’ve reached out to your five people? I’d love to know the outcome.
