Parents on road trips know the familiar refrain from the back seat, “Are we there yet?” Funny how as adults, we find ourselves asking the same question about our fitness goals.
Take a recent client, for instance—5-foot-7, weighing 215 pounds, with a goal to shed 30 pounds. The inevitable query arises, “How long is this going to take?”
Typically, I’d delve into the world of numbers and math, projecting a timeline based on average weight loss rates. It’s a straightforward approach, providing clarity on expectations and dispelling the notion of quick fixes perpetuated by social media gurus.
But what if we shift the perspective?
What if, instead of a finite timeline, we consider the journey as a lifelong commitment?
Imagine responding to the question with, “The rest of your life.”
Why? Because the ultimate goal isn’t just reaching a number on the scale. It’s about cultivating habits and well-being that extend far beyond a specific target.
Ask yourself, after shedding those 30 pounds, do you revert to old habits, or do you embrace the opportunity to elevate your health and happiness continuously?
My aim is to guide clients toward a lifetime of pain-free, injury-free living—not just for a few months but for the long haul.
So, the next time you ponder, “Are we there yet?” It’s perfectly okay to say, “Not yet.”
