Is Your Trainer Doing This?

Personal trainers have one job:

To get you the results you’re looking for. That could be to get stronger…build more muscle…help with your balance…or help you lose weight.

Your trainer develops a program to help you reach your goals…but sometimes, they get it wrong.

Sometimes, the program doesn’t work for the client, and it leaves them frustrated by the results.

Has this happened to you?

To be honest, this happens more frequently than you may think.

First…the trainer may not have all the information needed to build the right program for you. Maybe they didn’t conduct a thorough enough assessment or ask the right questions.

This could lead to issues when it comes to designing the right program for you. There may be a variation of an exercise that will yield you better results. Or maybe the latest research is showing that there’s a better way to plan your program.

Honestly, though, this probably isn’t the reason your experiences with personal trainers in the past may not have been all that positive. That’s because, sadly, most of them only pay attention to you when you’re in the gym with them for 3 hours a week or so. And when you walk out the door — all sweaty and worked up — they forget about you until the next session.

Three hours a week of training is great, and you may enjoy it and experience some decent results.

But what about the other 165 hours of the week?

That’s when either the magic happens, or a training program goes off the rails and leads to disappointment.

Think of it this way: A trainer is someone who just leads you through a workout. He or she may not have the education or experience to guide you on the nutrition and lifestyle habits you need to follow outside the gym to maximize your results.

A coach is different. Coaching involves a relationship between the client and the coach that’s a two-way street. A coach can gradually layer habit lessons for you in a way that makes it easy to adopt one small change at a time, and he or she would be able to hold you accountable so that you’re both holding up your end of the bargain.

The coaching relationship doesn’t end when the hour training session is over and the next client walks through the door. With a real coach, the relationship actually deepens when you’re not together … with check-ins, lessons, exercises to do at home in between sessions, and more.

Look, I’m sure there are some fabulous personal trainers out there who put together flawless programs and expertly lead their clients through the workouts in a way that’s enjoyable and gets results.

But being a coach is different. It’s far more rewarding and often results in the client having a better experience and getting better results. It’s why I became one, after all 🙂
